Build Love for Math as an Math Workshop Volunteer

Want to help kids get excited about math and have a great time doing it? Assist a teacher during math workshops at our partner elementary schools. Your assignments will be at the teacher’s discretion and will include leading games, running activity stations, and assisting kids with activities.

Potential school locations:

Schools are generally in the Rainier Valley area of Seattle. Times are to be determined, but will be between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Schools include:

Hawthorne Elementary School, 4100 39th Ave S; Seattle, WA 98118

John Muir Elementary, 3301 S. Horton, Seattle, WA 98144

Martin Luther King Jr.  Elementary, 6725 45th Ave. S., Seattle, WA 98118

Van Asselt Elementary, 7201 Beacon Ave S., Seattle, WA 98108

The minimum time commitment is a one-hour shift one day a week. Ideally a volunteer would work two shifts a day two or more days a week.  We seek a volunteer who can commit to working in the classroom for a full, 10-week trimester, with the opportunity to renew commitment for additional trimesters if desired. We will be meeting with our partner schools in the coming month to set this school year’s goals for teachers and students and at that time will identify specific days/times with teachers seeking volunteer support.

Details:

The volunteers for this role will receive training from Explorations in Math Mathematicians in Residence as well as direction from the classroom teachers. You will staff a station doing math activities or a math game, either from the curriculum or using dice and card games. You will help classroom teachers engage every child in the class in math and work toward every student knowing how to play the game taught without supervision as well as keeping students on task and assisting with their mathematical thinking. This position is ideal for people who have time during weekdays and are looking for a way to contribute directly to student learning in a wonderful Rainier Valley school.

Skills desired:

Confidence in the ability to learn and love math a must!

Comfort engaging with elementary-age children

Openness to feedback from educators on how to be effective
