The Challenge
For the past 5 years, on average, only 42% of 4th graders in the Seattle School District have met standards on the math portion of the Washington State Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) standardized test. Some of the schools with the lowest scores in the entire district are in the Central District of Seattle. On a 5 year average, only 12% of 4th grade students have met standards.

"Students come to school with little confidence that they can tackle tough work. How can we build more confidence and self-esteem (in our children)?"
Dr. June Rimmer Speech at the African American Academy, July 2003

The Solution:
Explorations in Math is dedicated to helping elementary students succeed in Math! Our teachers work in the schools, during regular class schedules as a year long guest teacher and in after school clubs and activities, helping Math Make Sense to all students.

Rather than using work books, work sheets, or memorization to teach math, we encourage our children to explore, question and experience math using games, hands on activities, group projects, chess, and technology.

Adhering to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards (NCTM) and the Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALR) we strive to teach students how to reason and enjoy the process of figuring out a problem. We want our students to gain confidence in their own problem solving abilities, to become critical thinkers, and to understand how math applies to their entire world.
